Report stolen or damaged grave markers

By: Earl H. Claborn, Pickett County Veterans Service Officer
Due to the recent vandalism and theft of property from several of the cemeteries in Pickett County, I am organizing a list of graves that were targeted. It seems that veterans bronze foot markers have been the idea target and therefore several were stolen and/or damaged.
If you have a friend or relative whose marker was stolen or damaged, please file an official report with the Pickett Sheriff’s Office, and also contact my office in order to have the marker replaced. I may be able to replace the markers free of charge. In order to get the marker replaced I will need a copy of the police report and a photograph of the damaged property. If the marker was stolen, take a photograph of the grave so that the headstone and the bare spot on the ground where the marker used to be can both be seen in the photograph. Photographs do not need to be of high quality. It will be used only for the purpose of providing proof that theft or vandalism has occurred.
Anyone with any knowledge concerning the theft or destruction of gravesites or property of the cemetery is advised to contact the Pickett County Sheriff’s Office 864-3210 or the Pickett County Veterans Service Office at 864-8240.
