Pickett County Cheerleaders named National Champions at competition

Pickett County Cheerleaders named National Champions at competitionSubmitted by Juli Denney
The Pickett County Varsity Cheerleaders traveled to Destin, Florida March 21-25 to compete in the Worldwide Spirit Assoc. Beach Nationals.
This was a two-day competition with the higher score between the two days being used to determine the winner. With this being a fairly new competition, Pickett County was the only squad in the competition. The competition is mainly geared toward All-Star Cheerleading Squads and since Pickett County was the only school squad in the large varsity non-tumbling division, they were held to a pre-determined score to be named National Champions.
The competition was held on the beach of Okaloosa Island with the Gulf Coast at a side view and spectators standing in the white sands in front of them, so this was unlike any other event that the cheerleaders had been a part of before. With the difference of environment and nervousness playing a role the Pickett County Cheerleaders did not score high enough to obtain the title on the first day.
However, the girls came out on the second day and knew what to expect, performed their routine with confidence, hit all their stunts and did what they came to do. The judges noticed the difference from day one and rewarded the Squad with a score well above what was needed to earn the title of WSA National Champions.
This year's varsity squad has only three seniors and no juniors, so we hope this is only the beginning of the good things we will see from this young squad. The Pickett County Cheerleaders would like to thank everyone who helped them with their fundraisers to be able to participate in the competition and would like to say a special "Thank You" to their parents, family members and friends for being so supportive at this year's event. The cheerleading squad is made up of 20 members and is coached by Juli Denney and Sherry Rich.
